Molasses production

Molasses are a by-product obtained during the sugar manufacturing process. After extracting the juice from the cane and crystallizing the sugar, there are honeys rich in minerals such as iron, calcium and potassium, which are called molasses. 

It is used in the food industry as a sweetener or ingredient in products such as breads, biscuits and sauces. It is also used in the manufacture of alcohol, in the production of biofuels and as a supplement in animal feed due to its high energy content. 

The Sugar Cane Agroindustry produced  1,030,607 metric tons of molasses in the Harvest 2023/24.

 

Use in alcohol production 

In the sugar cane agroindustry molasses are also used to produce alcohol. Every year, mills produce up to 65 million gallons of alcohol. This process not only maximizes the value of molasses, but also contributes to the global economy. 

Significant economic contribution 

In 2023, molasses exports accounted for 19% of the total exports of Guatemala’s Sugar Cane Agroindustry. This activity generated 75 million in foreign exchange for the country, highlighting the economic importance of this by-product.

In Guatemala, molasses has established itself as a valuable resource in the dairy industry. Its high energy content makes it an essential component to maintain the vitality and well-being of cows, optimizing milk production.
